BS Gender Studies
An interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary undergraduate programme exploring gender, identity, representation, society and culture.
Rationale
The aim of education is to prepare one for changing local, national, and global realities. As such, academic disciplines also undergo various changes to meet new challenges; so is the case of Gender Studies.
Most Gender Studies departments in Pakistan are off-shoots of what began as Women’s Studies to introduce a five-year project in 1989 by the Women’s Development Division, Government of Pakistan. The project aimed to create social change by recognizing women as agents of change, valuing women’s experiences and contributions, promoting respect for women’s human rights, encouraging sensitivity to gender issues and patriarchal norms, and developing strategies for empowerment.
Catering to the requirements of the 21st century, Women’s Studies became more specifically known as Gender Studies. Gender Studies encompasses a broader range of issues and perspectives and includes the study of women, men, children and others, including sexual minorities.
